Computing/iMedia
Creative iMediaiMedia students aren't sitting an exam this summer unless they choose to resit after they receive their results from the January exam in March. We won't be in a position to put tailored revision in place until we know who those students are, and how they did on their exam (OCR Provide a breakdown by question which we will use to make individualised revision lists).
iMedia students who do choose to resit in the summer will be sitting paper R081 of the course OCR Cambridge National Certificate in Creative iMedia (J817):https://www.ocr.org.uk/qualifications/cambridge-nationals/creative-imedia-level-1-2-award-certificate-j807-j817 This is a 75 minute paper that covers the entirety of the pre-production skills they have been taught. The exam counts for 25% of their overall grade.
Computing
Computer Science students have been given individualised lists of topics to revise based on their performance in their mock exam in December. We have not put together a week-by-week breakdown of these topics as we feel a differentiated approach where pupils revise the topics most relevant to them is a more effective use of their time.
Computer Science students should be making full use of the Smartrevise website:https://smartrevise.onlinefor which we have paid their subscription fee. This will allow them to choose topics to revise (based on their personalised revision list) and answer quick multiple-choice questions to test their understanding. When they can repeatedly answer a question correctly the website considers it mastered and asks that question often. If they answer a question incorrectly, they are given immediate feedback and a link to relevant videos on YouTube that will help correct their misunderstanding. Smart revise is easy to dip in and out of so we recommend pupils use it during otherwise dead time - on their phone whilst waiting for a bus, for example.
Pupils should also be making use of the OCR GCSE Videos available on https://craigndave.org/videos/ These are tailored to their course and provide all the subject knowledge they need in easy to understand form.
We also have a subscription to the Teach ICT website
(username: l183hs password: python9) which has theory websites and revision materials for their course.
Lastly ReviseComputerScience:https://revisecomputerscience.com/ has fifty "six-a-day" worksheets pupils can download, print off and complete, each of which has six exam-style questions that will take no more than twenty minutes to complete and provide essential exam practice in the final run up to their exams.
Computer Science students will be sitting papers 01 and 02 of the course GCSE Computer Science (9-1) (J276)https://www.ocr.org.uk/qualifications/gcse/computer-science-j276-from-2016Each paper counts for 50% of their final grade.
Paper 01 is 90 minutes long and covers:
- Systems Architecture
- Memory
- Storage
- Wired and wireless networks
- Network topologies, protocols and layers
- System security
- System software
- Ethical, legal, cultural and environmental concerns
Paper 02 is also 90 minutes long and covers:
- Algorithms (although paper 01 CAN ask algorithms questions too)
- Programming techniques
- Producing robust programs
- Computational logic
- Translators and facilities of languages
- Data representation
